Tax Tips / Articles

Keep a running document folder

Save W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, K-1s and receipts to one folder as they arrive. It shortens preparation time and reduces the chance of a missed deduction.

Track deductible mileage and home-office use

Self-employed clients often leave money on the table. A simple monthly log of business miles and workspace square footage is usually enough support.

Report life changes early

Marriage, a new dependent, a move to another state, or a property purchase can change your filing status, credits and withholding.

Plan, don't just file

Quarterly check-ins on estimated payments, retirement contributions and capital-gain timing can lower next April's bill considerably.

Foreign accounts have their own rules

If your combined foreign accounts exceeded $10,000 at any point in the year, an FBAR is required in addition to your return.
