Did You Know? The $3 Presidential Mystery on Your Tax Return
Checking "Yes" to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund question on Form 1040 does not increase your taxes or reduce your refund — and there's more than 50 years of history behind that tiny box.

Have you ever noticed this question near the top of Form 1040?
“Do you want $3 of your federal tax to go to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund?”
Here’s the surprising part
Checking “Yes” does not increase your taxes or reduce your refund.
The program dates back to the early 1970s and was strengthened by campaign-finance reforms following the Watergate scandal. Originally, taxpayers could designate $1. Congress increased the amount to $3 in 1993.
For decades, the fund helped finance presidential campaigns. Today, major-party presidential nominees generally no longer rely on it for general-election funding — but the little $3 checkbox is still there.
So the next time you see it on your tax return, you’ll know there’s more than 50 years of American history behind that tiny box!
